Women account for about one-third of the adult/adolescent HIV/AIDS diagnoses in New Jersey.
Among the 50 states, New Jersey has one of the highest proportion of females among persons living with AIDS.
Most women (64%) living with HIV/AIDS were exposed by heterosexual transmission.
Eighty-five percent of new diagnoses among women occurred in minorities

Sixty-five percent of women exposed through heterosexual contact in 2006 had contact with partners of unknown HIV risk.
Of women reported with HIV/AIDS in 2008, 50% were age 40 and over; 16% were under 25.
The rate of HIV/AIDS diagnosis among African American women was 20 times higher than the rate among non-Hispanic White women from 2005-2006.
Twenty-four percent of all infected women exposed through heterosexual contact were reported as partners of injection drug users.

In New Jersey HIV/AIDS affects the African American community more than any other racial, ethnic or demographic group.
1 in 62 African Americans is living with HIV/AIDS, compared with 1 in 705 Whites. African Americans account for:
♦ 14% of New Jersey’s population
♦ 56% of New Jersey residents ever diagnosed with HIV/AIDS
♦ 55% of New Jersey residents living with HIV/AIDS
Among those living with HIV/AIDS, African Americans account for:
♦ 64% of women with HIV/AIDS
♦ 50% of men with HIV/AIDS
♦ 59% of cases among injection drug users
♦ 74% of children with HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS is the 3rd leading cause of deaths for African American males and 5th leading cause for African American females in 2004.
